Going on a weekend getaway or family holiday without researching or planning your trip can mean you miss out on some of the area’s best attractions.  Therefore, knowing where you should go before you visit Queensland’s Granite Belt will ensure your trip to Stanthorpe is a success. But for those visiting the region for the first time, which activities should you do? Here are some ideas.

1. Winery Hopping

Heading to a winery is definitely one of the must do activities when visiting Stanthorpe and the surrounding Granite Belt region. The area’s climate is perfect for producing some of the country’s best wines. Some of the famous wineries that can be found in Stanthorpe include Ballandean Estate, The Summit, and Golden Grove. Visitors will be able to taste the variety of wines in each winery. Be sure to leave room in your car boot for a few take away bottles or cartons.

2. National Park Tours

Stanthorpe is just a few minutes drive from Girraween National Park. It is a beautiful place to walk around and enjoy the views of the forests, flowers, and mountain range. The park is open to the public all year round, and visitors can choose to go on a half-day or full-day hike.

3. Biking on the Granite Belt Trail

For the more energetic, the region is the perfect spot to rent a bike and enjoy the Granite Belt Trail. It is a great way to see the sights of Stanthorpe and the surrounding area. The trail starts at the Granite Belt Visitor Centre and goes to the Ballandean Estate Winery. The bike trail is primarily flat and is suitable for all ages, making it the perfect activity for a family day out. You can rent a bike from the visitor centre and enjoy a leisurely ride through some of the most beautiful countryside in Australia.

4. Apple Picking

Stanthorpe and the neighbouring Applethorpe are known for its apples, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a day of apple picking. Visitors in the region throughout February, March and April can go to one of the many farms in the area and pick their own apples from the trees. Many apple orchards offer tours and tastings for visitors, while others such as Suttons offer visitors the chance to try a range of apple products including Apple Brandy, liquors and preserves.  They also serve the region’s best apple pie.

5. Visit the Man-Made Pyramid in Ballandean

The Ballandean Pyramid is an artificial pyramid located in Ballandean, just outside Stanthorpe. The pyramid is made of granite and is the largest artificial pyramid in the world. It was built in 2006 and is now a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can climb to the top of the pyramid and enjoy the views of the surrounding area. The pyramid is also a popular spot for picnics and is a great place to take a break and enjoy the region’s natural beauty.

6. Explore Donnellys Castle

Located in Stanthorpe, Donnellys Castle is a 19th-century castle once home to an Irish family. The castle is now a museum and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the castle and learn about the history of the family who lived there. The castle is also a popular spot for weddings and is a beautiful place to take photos.

Donnellys Castle, although not actually a ‘castle’ is definitely worth a visit when in the region.

Donnellys Castle is a collection of giant granite boulders, which were famously the hideout for the notorious bushranger ‘Captain Thunderbolt’.  Here you can enjoy wandering over, under and through the network of boulders, as you explore the maze of granite rocks.   The view from the top is amazing so don’t forget to bring your phone or camera. While it’s not suitable for those with limited mobility, it is a great spot for those with active kids who love to climb and explore. The boulders are just 50 metres from the carpark and there are toilets and picnic tables making it a great place for a picnic lunch or quick stop.
